HOW SERIOUS IS THE CRISIS? WHAT'S AT STAKE?

Agenda for the Future of Nursing

Health care industry organizations recognize the role and value of diversity in shaping a positive future. The American Nursing Association (ANA), in its strategic planning document, Agenda For the Future, identifies Diversity, Leadership and Recruitment/Retention as three of 10 domains that must be addressed for the nursing profession to achieve a successful future. And the Health Care at the Crossroads study cites diversity as one of its key tactics to support a culture of retention: "Diversify the workforce to broaden the base of potential workers and to improve patient safety and health care quality for patients of all origins and backgrounds."

One thing we all know for sure is that if nursing teams want to be successful, to put an end to the nursing shortage they will need to capitalize on the strength of diversity. They will need to make a commitment and take action to hire and appreciate nurses who bring different experiences, expertise and ways of thinking to the team. They will need to learn how to build teamwork and cooperation on the strength of diversity - the ability to honor differences in the service of a shared vision.

In its study, Health Care at the Crossroads: Strategies for Addressing the Evolving Nursing Crisis, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations cited a shortage of nursing staff as a factor in 24% of the 1,609 cases involving unanticipated patient death or injury. The study reports that 126,000 nursing positions are currently unfulfilled in the United States and 90% of long-term care organizations lack sufficient nurse staffing to provide even the most basic care.

Statistics Paint A Stark Picture

The US Labor Bureau of Statistics reports that more than one million new and replacement nurses will be required in the next six years... A 21% increase in the need for nurses nationwide compared to the national average for occupational growth expected increase of 14%.The RN staffing situation is one of the most critical priorities in the healthcare Industry, with staffing shortages leading to issues of hospital safety, increased costs and decreasing client care. Human Resources and other Executive Level Administrators are continually working to attract and retain more qualified people to the profession.

The statistics paint a stark picture. But diversity and health care involve much more than numbers. The health care crisis is both a bottom-line issue and one that affects people's lives - and deaths. It's about quality of care and the consequences that can occur when understaffed and under-resourced health care organizations fail to deliver up to standards, expectations and needs. It's not just about avoiding disasters; it's about living up to your organizational and personal potential.
